Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia)
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Collects patient information including observation of overall condition and recognizes and reports obvious changes in patient condition including emergencies. Accurately documents patient information in the medical record as appropriate. Transports patients, correctly identifying the patient prior to transport; transports blood products from the Blood Bank to the Operating Room and returns unused blood products to the Blood Bank. Draws blood samples from arterial, pulmonary artery and central venous lines; draws blood specimens for type and screen or type and cross and signs specimen label. Hooks up, performs routine maintenance of, and trouble-shoots invasive monitoring systems such as arterial lines, left atrial lines, interventricular and intra-cranial pressure monitoring systems, esophageal manometry, special intra-operative pressure studies. Operates, calibrates, and performs routine maintenance on a variety of technical equipment used in the operating room and simulation environments, such as the physiological monitor terminals, the respiratory gas analyzer, pulse oximeter, trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE), TTE (Trans-thoracic echocardiography), point-of-care (POCUS) diagnostic ultrasound, cell saver (intra-operative blood salvage), rapid infusion/transfusion system, peripheral nerve block, simulation equipment (part task trainers, full human simulators, computer based training), etc. Correctly operates i-stats, inserts peripheral IV's; performs 12 lead EKG's; recognizes lethal/serious cardiac arrhythmias. Utilizes standard precautions for all patients which include following hand hygiene practices & procedures. Follows isolation guidelines for individual patients. Utilizes equipment in a safe manner and reports unsafe equipment and working conditions to appropriate individuals. Remains knowledgeable of equipment, supplies and common medications used in Anesthesia. Anticipates anesthesiologist/anesthetists' needs for equipment and supplies. Restocks the anesthesia cart daily and between cases. Orders supplies as needed. Disinfects/cleans specialized equipment as per the approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for each piece of equipment. Disinfects equipment, including wheelchairs and litters, between patient uses per the appropriate SOP for the type of equipment. Prepare and administer medications as directed by the attending physician. Mentor and train lower graded technicians, nurses, medical students, and anesthesia residents on anesthesia technology procedures. Certification as an Anesthesia Technician and a minimum of 4 years of experience. Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the applicant must also possess one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level GS-7 in the federal government AND must fully meet the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) at that level. GS-7:
KSAs Knowledge of the fundamentals of standard equipment operation, calibration and function. Knowledge of correct use of non-invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology. Ability to appropriately interact with patients during anesthetic procedures. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies and equipment appropriate to routine anesthetic procedures, such as those found in typical inpatient settings. GS-8:
In addition, you must also demonstrate the following KSAs at the Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) GS-8 level:
Knowledge of the correct use of invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology. Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG). Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment, often while the patient is anesthetized. Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures. Knowledge and understanding of arterial pressure line wave forms including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician or anesthetist of an impending life-threatening situation. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more difficult anesthetic procedures such as those found in inpatient settings with more acutely ill patients. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at the GS-6 through GS-8 level to have Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification. References:
